Wilsons of Lanarkshire
« on: Monday 21 October 19 18:24 BST (UK) »
Good evening all,

I'm new to all this, but am trying to trace down some family history on my father's side. I have gotten as far back as my 4th great-grandfather Charles Wilson, father of Peter Wilson (who married Frederikka Thesen while he was working on a copper mine in Norway). Peter was born February 17th 1828, but there is hardly any info on his father Charles. I am wondering where else to look for info?

Kind regards from a sunny South Africa,

Neill Wilson

Have you searched Scotland's People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi Neill

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

You don't mention who Peter's mother or siblings were. Is this them in 1841? They all show as born outside of the county:

Charles Wilson 44 overseer
William Wilson 16
Peter Wilson 13
Mary Wilson 10
James Wilson 8
Agnes Hamilton 19 servant

Address: Woodhead Lead Mines, Carsphairn, Kirkcudbrightshire

Was Peter's mother a Margaret Stewart? If so, possible entry for Mary www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTFP-5KM

There is this entry from 1851:

Charles Wilson 54 Overseer Lead Miner b. Sanquhar Wanlockhead, Dumfriesshire
Peter Wilson 23 miner b. Sanquhar Wanlockhead, Dumfriesshire
Mary Paterson 21

Address: Overseer House, Woodhead Lead Mines, Carsphairn, Kirkcudbrightshire

For this family, I think Mary married in 1850 and James joined the church and later married in 1863 in Edinburgh.

A possible death for Charles post 1855 and the start of Scottish official registration of BMDs. If the correct one in 1872 New Abbey, Kirkcudbright, it should include the names of his parents if this info was known to the informant of his death. His son, James Stewart Wilson, was the Minister of New Abbey at this time.

There is an entry in the Wills & Testaments section of Scotlands People (as linked above by Forfarian) which shows:

Charles Wilson
19/9/1872
resided at Woodhead Mine, parish of Carsphairn
Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court
SC16/41/30

If you have further details on Peter, this would help in trying to connect to his extended family and from this try to get details on his parents.

With the birth place coming up on the censuses for Charles Wilson, this could connect to him or a sibling? www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYMD-NTL

A very basic rough tree for him? www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:94ZT-Q4F

Also, a possible sister https://gw.geneanet.org/schnapper?lang=en&n=wilson&oc=0&p=elizabeth

Morning all,

I should have given some more details on what I had for Peter Wilson thus far!

All I had was:

Full Name: Peter Wilson
DoB: 17/02/1828
DoD: 28/05/1892
He was born in Scotland to Charles Wilson (no mother mentioned, she died when he was 5). He also got into the mining business and moved to Giessen in Germany in the 1880s. No mention of other siblings either.

His father Charles, all i know is that he was a mining supervisor for the Duke of Buccleuch at Leadhills.

I have also attempted to contact the distant relative who posted the above info to see if they have any other information on Charles. Waiting to hear back from him.

Thanks Monica, that definitely sounds promising! I am busy registering on the FamilySearch website so I can look into your links today.

Will let you know if I find out any more information.

Kind regards,

Neill

Neill, I think Leadhills was the property of the Hope's, the duke of Buccleuch had Wanlockhead over the county line!

Thank you Skoosh!

Funnily enough, not sure how this escaped my Google results earlier... but I came across this 2004 newsletter from the Carsphairn Heritage Group, with an awesome write-up on my 4th great-grandfather Charles Wilson.

https://www.carsphairn.org/CarsphairnArchive/files/original/5a85832ba5fcac356cc4bc0ea9586a03.pdf

This fills in some of the gaps, and hopefully I can find more information on Charles' parents etc the more I look.
