The Brown Family Feteresso 1800's
« on: Sunday 03 November 19 21:31 GMT (UK) »
Newbie here.. I am trying to trace more info about my grandmother's father's family for her.

James Russell Brown born 22/10/1911 in Fetteresso (we believe Elfhill Den) to William Brown & Catherine Brown (nee Norrie) who married in July 1898 (no DOB for either of them). William was a railway labourer but I am unsure on Catherine.

They also had Norah, Mabel, and Alexander

James joined the army and moved to Barracks in West Yorkshire which is where the descendants are now.

If they were married in Scotland the marriage certificate of 1898 should have the bride and groom ages. That gives an approx dob. And their parents names are usually there as well.

Scotland's People is the reliable source for that certificate.  Then look for the parents on earlier census.  That's a start anyway.

Correction Alexander 1899 was not their son, he was born as Alexander Brown in 1902.

On the 1901 census at Fetteresso, William is noted as 60 and in 1911 = 72.

In 1901 Catherine N is 29 and 1911 =39

With them in 1911 is I guess another daughter age 4 noted as Catherine Maggi, probably Catherine Margaret who was registered 1907 in Fetteresso.

The 3 most likely births for Catherine are all in Angus.
NORRIE   CATHERINE   1868   St Peter
NORRIE   CATHERINE HENDE   1871   Arbroath
NORRIE   CATHERINE   1872   Dunnichen

William will be more difficult but there are 3 on the 1851 census on Freereg at Fetteresso.

There are two William’s on SP below. Later census returns may help.

BROWN   WILLIAM   JAMES BROWN/BETSY GRAY   19/06/1844   Fetteresso
BROWN   WILLIAM   JAMES BROWN/   26/12/1838   Fetteresso

Good Luck, Colin

William will be more difficult
Not if you get his marriage certificate, which will tell you the names of his parents, including his mother's maiden surname.

It will also, of course, tell you how old both William and Catherine were when they married, and the names of Catherine's parents including her mother's maiden surname.

No point in speculating when the answer is readily available.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
