Sounds interesting, and very possible - it seems he (young Robert ) became a printer / compositor  later in life, and I'd thought his father Robert was a shopkeeper / stationer, not a servant, so it looks as if they might not have been from such a good start. I've dithered between 1784 and 1786 for his birth date.
(Later on most of the family seem to have been carvers / gilders - picture frames, I suppose, in the main.)
Thank you trish1120 for your generous help and time. I'll try and follow that up asap.

Thank you, Capetown, for your information, mostly it confirms what I've got about Robert Toplis - I'd noted the "Exeter Place" address for the '61 census, as well as the '52 Trade directory, and assumed they were "living over the shop", so to speak. I have the censuses, and am half-certain that Robert died after the 1861 census, and prior to the 1871 census, when the family seems fragmented. William Toplis, a son of Robert, was where I'd started from.
I must try to chase those apprenticeship records, could be very helpful. I'm persuaded that Robert -the-printer's wife was a Mary, from census record of 1841 and baptism records, and she may well have been a Mary. It seems highly probable that Robert-the-Printer b c 1784/6 was a child of a Robert Toplis and his wife, Elizabeth. I'm assuming they would have been born c 1730s, but haven't yet quite isolated the right couple .... but I'm still trying!
Thank you for taking the trouble to do research that matches what I've got. It is appreciated.
