Marriage Licence Wisbeach 1832.....where to find?
« on: Wednesday 13 November 19 17:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi there
I have a couple who marry in Wisbeach in 1832 by licence.
The parish record at FamilySearch sadly doesn't help me any further.

Where could I perhaps find a copy of the licence itself ? Possibly the woman was underage and the name of the father might be given ?

The couple in question are
George Stokes
Jane Johnson (born c 1811)
both OTP
4th April 1832 at Wisbeach St Peter Cambs

Grateful for any pointers
Rebel

First thing to do is to determine which Diocese covered Wisbeach.  Copies of the Bond/Allegation would be housed with that Diocese (assuming they had survived).

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thankyou for your response.
Apparently, Wisbeach/Wisbech was in the diocese of Ely.
After a bit of googling, I read at Findmypast that Marriage Bonds were no longer necessary after 1823, ie 8 years before the marriage took place.
How do I make sense out of that ?

PS Very new to research in East Anglia!

My response would be - find out where the Ely Diocesan records are held and confirm or not whether that is the case.  Try Cambridgeshire County Records Office for starters  :-\

The likelihood of finding any fathers names on a marriage certificate before 1837 is not high.  I see from FreeReg that the witnesses are Charles Stokes and Ann Raisin.  This record is a transcription.

You seem to know when Jane was born i.e 1811 which made her either 20 or already 21 at the time of her marriage.

A bit of info about marriage bonds

What were marriage bonds?
The marriage bonds enabled a marriage licence to be issued without having to proclaim banns in church on three successive Sundays prior to the marriage. The bonds give interesting details about the two parties including names, dates, location, age and the groom's profession.

According to this list you may not find any record of a marriage licence for this couple.

Cambridgeshire, Ely Diocese Marriage Licences Place List

St. Peters, Wisbech   1759   1770

Wisbech St. Peter   1750   1805

I have found the image for the marriage on Family Search.  It tells you no more than the transcription does other than it was by licence.

I can see Jane easily in Census from 1871 inwards.
(With Daug Eliza in some Census)

But is this her in 1851?

Matthew Shimmels 33
Ann Shimmels   29   born Clinchwarder, Norfolk
Jane Stokes   40 Sister, Mar, Cook (crossed out), born Wisbeach
Thomas Broks   34

1861 Ann Shimmels is born c 1819 Wisbech, Cambridgeshire

Ann JOHNSON married Matthew SHIMMEL 5 Jun 1843 St Pancras
Her Father THOMAS Johnson a Butcher
A MARY Johnson was a Witness

So looks like Ann was Janes Sister.

Hi Trish
many thanks for your input and, yes, you are correct with the connection to the Shimmel(s) family.
But going back further has been proving difficult.

I have Jane's parents being Thomas and Ann Johnson, but really only on this assumption:
In the 1841 census I found an Eliza Johnson (it should really be Stokes) with Thomas and Ann in London in the Hampstead area. Thomas and Ann both born Lincs. and just followed it on through the census years. Ann handily lived until she was 95 and later lived with a son Richard and family.
I can't find a marriage between Ann and Thomas or baptisms for their children. Or a baptism for Eliza and they only appear to have had 1 child.
And apart from his name, I have zero on George Stokes.

Jane Stokes is "married" in the 1851 and a "widow" in the 1861 census but knowing nothing about his age or location, it's difficult to find a death registration.

The whole family  of Johnsons seem to have left Lincs/Cambs for London (Hampstead area) , Daughter Eliza was born 1834 in London .
I think I'm just grabbing at straws!
