James POOLE, born 1830/1831, Taunton, Somerset

Hello,

I am having difficulty confirming details for the above, whose parents were supposedly Richard and Jane POOLE, together with 5 brothers/sisters.   The 1841 England Census covers the family but no mention of James nor can I uncover birth information for him.

I am fully aware of his criminal history and subsequent transportation to Australia.......court and prison records not helpful as far as I am aware!!

Can anyone help please??

The only CONVICT I can find by that name would have to have been born before your date of 1830.
He arrived in NSW, 1831 below is the record details for the issuing of his Ticket of Leave in 1842.
It also states he was tried at the Oxford City Quarter Sessions, District is Merton.
If I can find anything else I will let you know.

This James POOLE did have a history of offending, his last being for stealing cheese, which led to him being sentenced to 7 years transportation at the Somerset County Assizes on 31/03/1845 (The National Archives, HO27/77, p.44).

Is the 1841 you are referring to Richard 30/Jane 28/Lydia 4/Thomas 2?

Thank you for that research.

Publow is an awfully long way, in Victorian terms, from Taunton, where James POOLE was convicted in 1845 and I am beginning to doubt whether or not my correspondents have misled me with their details.   All the convict records birthdate him as 1830/1831 and this 1841 Census has him in 1833 (overlooking Victorian recording!!).   However, added to the possibilities.

Thank you for your post and, more importantly, generally confirming information I finally managed to unearth earlier this afternoon.   However, there are some discrepancies.

I understand he married Jane CORDEN (aged 21) at Taunton on 02/08/1810 and they had the following children, for some you note their mother was "Mary"??:

Louisa born 1813:
Martha 1818;
Ruth 1824;
Elizabeth 1826;
Ann 1829;
James 1831;
William 1834: and
Maria 1835.

James, William, Ruth and Maria appear alongside their father in the 1841 Census as you note, but Jane, his wife, is missing,  as are Louisa, Martha, Elizabeth and Ann (some may have married and others gone into "service").   Incidentally, Joseph was imprisoned in July 1833 for deserting his family!!
