Was this photo taken in Dundalk?
« on: Saturday 16 November 19 17:58 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Can anyone say if this photo could have been taken in Dundalk? The printer paper on the back says "Velox". I found this information that might help date the picture:

"If the back of a photo has the printing 'Velox,' the photo dates circa 1940s-50s. "

http://www.cycleback.com/photoguide/stamps.html

I know who the person is, and do not want to name him. If you know who he is, and you know who his wife was, could you PM me?

Thank you.

PS I don't know why it is upside down. I tried rotating the original and uploading it with a different name, but that didn't work.

Edit - this time it isn't upside down  ???

I am pretty sure it is not Dundalk. It never had a pier like that. The pier reminds me of the piers on resorts on the south of England. Or the Isle of Man or Llandudno.

Thank you very much. He must have been visiting someone when the picture was taken.

Thank you for the reply.
I looked at that picture and then looked for other pictures of the North Pier, Blackpool. I don't think the railing is the same.

But that gave me an idea to try the same strategy for the other locations mentioned in the first reply. Will do so later today.

Those piers on stilts that go some way out to sea often had a theatre or amusement pavilion on them, out at the far end. They are very typical of Victorian English holiday resorts. There’s dozens of them still, from Hastings to Bournemouth and various places up the west side of England such as Blackpool. Morecambe perhaps? Also some on the east coast at Clacton & Southend. I can’t think of any in Ireland. There might have been the odd one but they definitely weren’t common.

Thank you, in that case I don't think I will try to figure out where the picture was taken. I know now that it was not in his home town, and that will be enough in this case.
