I've taken the map off the above post as this is the battlefield map used at the time.
A & B Coys. 1/KSLI (in Rainbow trench) were in support of 2/ Yorks & Lancs.
C Coy. (in Larkhill trench) was in support of A & B Coys. & D Coy. were at the Batt. H.Q. (in Rose trench).
1/KSLI are in Blue & 2/Y & L in yellow.
The objective was the brown line.
This as you know was the end phase of the Somme Offensive.

Oh Wow!!... So much information, can't thank you enough, Jim :)

My initial thought's, of which there will be plenty, is how easy they made the battle plans sound, when in actual fact, history will record a very different story.

Thanks once again :)

A plan only survives 1st. contact.
They did reach their objective & it was held there by the time the Somme Offensive ground to a halt the following month.

……….and at such huge cost. :'(

Remembering & recording what these guys did is the least we can do. This guy is one of two relatives of mine that served in the trenches and I'm immensely humbled by them both.

They suffered 25% casualties during the operation, according to the top brass these were acceptable losses.

........… Unbelievable isn't it? It makes me wonder how many of the "Top Brass" had close family members, in amongst all the muck & Bullets, on the front line.
