I'm somewhat new to researching Irish genealogy, so I'm unsure on the best methods and sites to use to search for Irish records, and would appreciate some help:
My ancestor James MacDonald moved to Arbroath, Scotland at some point in the 1850s or 60s and married Ann Ramsay in 1865 (Roman Catholic). Their marriage record lists his parents as James MacDonald and Mary O'Neill of Tyrone. He was born circa 1833 according to census records.
Since the surname McDonnell is more common in Ulster than MacDonald (which is Scottish), I think his surname may have been adapted to Scotland though can't find a record on Find My Past.
Any ideas? Would be much appreciated
