Burial of George Ballinger
« on: Wednesday 20 November 19 11:29 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find the final resting place of George Ballinger (var sp), who died on 14 Aug 1896 at Stratton Workhouse, St Margaret, Highworth.

If it helps his wife - from whom I believe he was estranged - died on 23 Mar 1892 in Highworth and was buried on 28 Mar 1892 at Radbourne Cheney.

The reason for their estrangement, as far as I can work out, was a spell in HMP Portland for molesting their daughter and other "unmentionable" offences.

I suppose one of the questions I am asking is where would ex-prisoners and workhouse inhabitants be buried?

Stratton St Margaret (Main Parish Part 1) - OPC is Nigel Chalk

This website - has transcribed  burials at Stratton from 1850-1877 (although the heading states 1850-1899)

There are 68 burials of people from Stratton Union Workhouse

Under the heading (in this article) is

High & Swindon poor Law Union - Information on the Workhouse for Stratton St Margaret

Many thanks for this - the website is interesting to say the least. However, it leaves my question of his burial unresolved as the list ends as you say at 1877.

the Wiltshire records on Ancestry don't help. His wife is there but not him as far as I can see.

Any other ideas?

What name is his death under only I can't see a registration for him in 1896  :-\

There are a couple of criminal register entries you may have seen from 1865 and 1880.

In a cemetery? Radnor Street Cemetery in Swindon opened in 1881.
