New York City; Wards; Districts; and 1870 census.
« on: Wednesday 20 November 19 21:09 GMT (UK) »
Can any body help.

I have a death certificate for a Catherine Adley who died 25th September 1872 at 1445, 2nd Avenue, 19th Ward, New York.
Can anybody tell me what district in 19th Ward will contain 1445, 2nd Avenue.

The reason I ask is as follows: I know Catherine had a husband called John who was a blacksmith they had a son Frank (Francis) born about 1850 and a daughter Mary born about 1857.

I am trying to find Catherine in the 1870 census. And have identified two alternatives but the surnames are slightly different as follows:

Firstly. There is a Catherine AUDLEY living in 29th District, 19th Ward; aged 40 with a husband John, a blacksmith and a son Francis aged 19

Secondly. There is a Catherine ARDLEY living in 4th District 19th Ward; aged 40 with a husband John, a blacksmith and a Daughter Mary aged 14

If I could identify in which district of the 19th Ward Catherine Adley died I am hoping to identify where she is in the 1870 Census.

Thanks in anticipation of any help.

John, Catherine & Mary are listed. Francis would have been 19, so probably out on his own. Address seems to match address given on DC

1870 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M8J2-GK1

Hi RJ137,

I have been pondering over your reply for a number of hours and I am now wondering whether both census returns are correct.

With regard to the 1870 census return for Catherine ARDLEY on the Ancestry website it states above the image  ‘ 2nd Enum (Second Enumeration) and the top of the image it gives an enumeration date of 18th January 1871. Whereas in the 1870 census return for Catherine AUDLEY the top of the page gives an enumeration date of blank day of July 1870.

This would mean that on the first enumeration ( July 1870) only Francis was living with his parents;  whereas in the second enumeration (January 1871) only Mary was living with her parents. It is possible that Mary could have been omitted from the  first enumeration (July 1870) as her brother fills the last line on the page and they omitted to include her at the beginning of the next page.

In support of this theory the Family directly above the AUDLEY family in the first enumeration are the FAUCETT Family and in the second enumeration they are the family BELOW the ARDLEY family. The head of the FAUCETT Family is on the same page as the ARDLEY family with the rest of the family on the next page.

Equally on the First enumeration starting on line 6 is the Stacom Family Head Francis Stacom followed by his wife Ellen Stacom followed by 9 children. In the the 2nd enumeration Francis and Ellen Stacom appear on rows 26 and 27 on the following page after the ARDLEY family.(their children are not included in the second enumeration

Would anybody agree with my logic that the family (AUDLEY/ ARDLEY has been enumerated twice once in July 1870 ad then again in January 1871.

I have a death certificate for a Catherine Adley who died 25th September 1872 at 1445, 2nd Avenue, 19th Ward, New York.

If you turn the page sideways you can see the street name/number.

Hi RJ 137.

I totally agree that if you turn the page sidewards one can see the words '2nd Avenue'. I was not disputing that fact.  I was just raising the fact that Ancestry refers to that page as a second enumeration some 6 months later.

Reading the following link
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1870_United_States_Census#Population_Undercount  indicates that the President ordered a 'recount' in New York and Pennsylvania and I was raising the possibility that this family (and others) were enumerated twice in the 1870 census.

The family are recorded as AUDLEY in the 1860  US federal census
