O'Malley/Gallacher - Newport, Mayo. Help please
« on: Friday 22 November 19 22:39 GMT (UK) »
My great great grandparents were Patrick O'Malley & Margaret Gallacher. They married in Newport, Mayo (on 15 Mar 1844 or 1845). They had a son, Patrick, in 1848 before moving to Edinburgh where they settled and raised a large family.

Try as I might, I can't find any pre-marriage information on either Patrick or Margaret or their families. Can anyone help with any information or point me in the right direction please, as I'm now at a complete dead end.

Many thanks
Phil

If they both died in Scotland from 1855 onwards - downloading their death certs should name their parents and give their mothers maiden names

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk is the site to use

Thanks Carole - they were both alive in the 1881 census (Edinburgh) but we haven't been able to find their death details using O'Malley/Malley/Maley

Were they alive in 1891?

If they died between censuses try using the wildcard search (eg)  Pat**   o*ma*l**y and 2yrs either side of their birthyears

The only 1881 entry I found seems to be the son b 1848 and who also has married a Margaret

I haven't seen the original document but the Ancestry transcription shows them as Mellay instead of Malley in 1881 - there is Patrick, Margaret & children John, James, Margaret, Michael & Mary Ann.

1891 - The only Margaret b 1831 Ireland is Margaret  Mallen aged 60 living with son James 23 b Ireland. Can't find a Patrick

The 1881 has an 18yr old son James but he was b Edinburgh so I don't think it's the right one which may mean Margaret  died between 1881-1891

Thanks for that, I think I need to try other permutations of the surname - they must be there somewhere.
