Key family
« on: Monday 25 November 19 22:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Is anyone researching the Key family in  Norfolk. My lot seem to have come from the area east of Norwich in  Postwick, Blofield, Thorpe Strumpshaw to name a few.
I was doing quite well until I got to William Key who married  Sarah Wymer in 1778. I would like to find his parents and previous generations. I wonder how far back the Keys go in Norfolk or were they from elsewhere.
There was a Dennis Key who had a son called William but I do not think this is a likely match as Dennis was a schoolteacher and William couldn't sign his own name when he married. Also no other Dennis's in subsequent generations despite legions of children and this was and still is a family that repeats names.
I think it is the William Key born to William and Ann Key in Mattishall in 1750's. It's out of area but seems a better fit as they seem to like to call the first boy William down the generations.
Just wondered if anyone had looked up this family.
Thanks

Thanks for the post Banbury, I do not think this line through Sarah Wymer is my line, but will keep the options open.
Regards

I see the Marriage and Bapt of 4 children in Postwich to William/Sarah on FreeREG.
William 1779
John 1780
Rose 1783
Sarah 1799
(big gap between last 2 girls)

It appears to me that Daug Rose married 1805 in Norwich.

Possible burial;
WILLIAM Key 12 Jul 1802, St John the Baptist Maddermarket, Norwich
Husband of (not named)
Age 49 (1753)

+ SARAH Key 14 Aug 1827 same Church age 82 (1745)
Abode St Stephens

There are some mixed up Trees as there are another couple William/Sarah Key having children in the same time frame. She was Sarah BROBIN

I agree William c 1753 is unlikely to be the Son of Dennis but by naming of children cant pin down Parents for him conclusively.

If descended from William 1779 his 2nd Marriage was to Susannah BRIGGS 1803 (he was a Widower)

Likely 1st Wifes burial;
25 Apr 1802, Susannah Key, Wife of William, late FLINT, Spinster

William/ Susanna married 6 Oct 1801 Freethorpe
So unlikely they had any children

Trish :)

Hi Trish,
Thanks for your reply.
I'm glad you agree about Dennis. Even though a lot of trees put him as the father I don't think he was.
Also I have tried to sift very carefully through the records (mainly FindMyPast, free reg and Norfolk fhs) to separate the Key/wymer children from the Key/ Brobin children.
I have noted both of William's  marriages and you are right there were no recorded children from his marriage to Susanna Flint.
I am learning towards the Mattishall birth but think I may have to take a trip to Norfolk  in the future.
Many thanks for your reply

According to a family history blog, William Key took his own life in 1803.  A brief newspaper report said he was 47 years old.

He is buried at Postwick.
Mentioned again in a later posting

NRO
Coroners Inquest
William Key age 50, 10 July 1802 St Gregory. Found drowned in the River Wensum near the dye house of Messrs. Gapp and Adcock in the parish of St Mary Coslany. Verdict. No evidence.

ADDED
He married by license, both were of Postwick. Not sure if the marriage bond will give any further information it's at the NRO

Two images (not great ones), bond and allegation. William Key a Husbandman, of the parish of Postwick.
