Help to identify a uniform
« on: Thursday 05 December 19 19:50 GMT (UK) »
Please, can anyone tell me anything at all about the uniform this man is wearing?  He may be my grandfather, born between 1919 and 1922. Any guidance at all gratefully received.

Hi, I would say that he is wearing the uniform of the American army, he also looks to be wearing second world war medal ribbons, and a "Rifle Sharpshooters" badge.
So probably taken mid to late 1940's.

Thank you. That is interesting as I have always been led to believe that this man was a GI, however if he is American the DNA is suggesting that in fact he isn't my grandfather after all and the date is also a bit late as my dad was born in 1942. Thank you for taking the trouble to respond.

Hello,

Bear in mind that his being in an American uniform doesn't necessarily mean that he was American born.  I don't know what the rules were for US Army, but several of my wife's family members who were born in Ireland served in the Canadian forces.

Best wishes

Thank you. The DNA points to 2 Scottish brothers. One I know to have been killed in 1944 whilst serving as a sapper in Italy. The other I don't know anything of his military service. The evidence does seem to suggest that the guy in the picture isnt who I'm looking for which is a shame as I have always believed it to be him and he looks nice!
