Edward McGartland
« on: Sunday 08 December 19 20:02 GMT (UK) »
I can't find anything relating to my great-grandfather Edward McGartland b. 1845 died 1921. I have his family traced down to present day but wanted to probe further back. He lived and died in Omagh but I've no facts on where he was born. All I know is that his father was also Edward and his occupation was a labourer. Records for Edward McGartland, occupation labourer can be seen here

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1895/05939/4687124.pdf

What makes me think this could be him is that 'Present at Death' was Mary Ann McGartland - his daughter(in law) was Mary Ann McGartland. Could this be him?

His birthplace is on the 1901 and 1911 entries but the following 1901 entry shows him as 42 - born 1859?  However - in 1911 he suddenly ages to 65??

The 1901 entry looks as though he was recently married.

The age increase from 1901/1911 census may be explained by the introduction of the Old Age Pension.
https://www.genguide.co.uk/source/old-age-pension-searches-ireland/128/

The 1911 census clearly says Edward & Mary were married 23 years (c1888) and had 4 children (2 living). Checking the marriage records easily finds the marriage in 1888-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1888/10757/5923108.pdf
Births for all 4 children are also easy to find (along with deaths of the twins)-
1. Edward McGartland (1 Apr.1897-3 Apr.1897) https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1897/02128/1808757.pdf  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1897/05865/4662456.pdf https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1897/05865/4662456a.pdf
2. Susan McGartland (2 Apr.1897-3 Apr.1897)

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1897/05865/4662456.pdf
3. Patrick Joseph McGartland (1898-aft.1911)
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1898/02073/1791551.pdf
4. James McGartland (9 July 1902-aft.1920)
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1902/01900/1737766.pdf (GRONI index has mother’s maiden name incorrect)

Based on occupation & father an Edward McGartland, labourer, this is a possible sibling for Edward Jr.- if not a much older sibling then still possibly related-

Old Age Pension application-
MULGREW Mary Anne Edward MCGARTLAND Bella Knockonny Errigle Keerogue Clogher Tyrone 1851 Parents married 1840, no trace of Mary Anne.

Note: same townland as the Edward McGartland who died 1895-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1895/05939/4687124.pdf (Knockanny?, age 80, widower, farmer, informant- Mary McGartland daughter)
An Edward McGartland is listed in Knockonny in Tithe Applotment book (1832/3)

This Isabella McGartland could be above Edward's wife (not available on Irish Genealogy site yet but can be viewed via GRONI after registration & purchase of credits)

Thank you all for input. Yes, Aghadowey - the births and deaths of Edward McGartland, including the twins is correct. This Edward was my great-grandfather. I was always led to believe that we were from Omagh historically but as you go further back to Edwards father it starts to shift to the Clogher area. I've no knowledge of this in my family but always was suspicious as some of the facts seem to match up. I do appreciate the help thus far and will endeavour to probe more, thanks all.

Trying to find Edward McGartlands father, born 1810 and possibly died 1895, though not definite. There is an Edward McGartland in the Griffiths Valuation but in Knockonny, Ballygawley area - could this be him?

Edward McGartland of Knockonny died 1895- details of records already found earlier in this thread. You can use same resources to do further searches. Also check online Parish Registers.

There doesn't seem to be any other Edward McGartlands recorded in Tyrone?

In a search of the 1851 Census on Irish Genealogy http://www.ireland-genealogy.com
I was able to find the following:

Mary Ann Mulgrew
Father: Edward McGartland
Mother: Bella

Parents married 1840
Townland: Knockonny
