Looking for a birth/baptism for Jesse Wilkinson from Old Park, Shropshire
« on: Thursday 12 December 19 14:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have just been down to the local Family Tree Centre, hoping to improve my chances of looking for the birth/baptism for my 3rd great, grandfather, Jesse Wilkinson (born at Old Park, Shropshire) but unfortunately without success as they do not have records on Shropshire.  Hoping I will have better luck on here?

This is what I have, so far, on Jesse Wilkinson: -

Jesse married Mary Ann Bishop on 8 April 1832 at Saint Bartholomew, Wednesbury, Stafford, England.

Their daughter, Ann Wilkinson (my 2nd great, grandmother) was baptised on 17th November 1833 at Bilston, Staffordshire. FHL Film Number426488 and her younger siblings were: -

Elizabeth aka Betsy baptised on 9th July 1843 at St. Leonard's, Bilston, Staffs.
Mary Ann born on 30th October and baptised on 31st October 1848 at Ettingshall, Staffs.
Mary Jane baptised on 19 November 1848 at St. Mary's, Bilston, Staffs.

I am unable to find the 1841 Census but have found these, which gives a rough idea of the period Jesse being was born around 1812/1813: -

1851 Census at Wolverhampton Road, Bilston in the parish of Ettingshall: -
Jesse Wilkinson age 38 - Engineer - Born: Old Park, Salop
Mary Ann Wilkinson age 30 - Born: West Bromwich, Staffs
Ann age 17 - Born: Bilston, Staffs
Elizabeth age 5 - Born: Bilston, Staffs
Mary Jane age 3 - Born: Bilston, Staffs

1861 Census at Orange Tree, Bilston:-
Jesse Wilkinson age 49 - Engineer - Salop
Mary Ann Wilkinson age 47 - West Bromwich, Staffordshire
Eliza Wilkinson age 18 - House maid - Bilston
Mary Ann Wilkinson (Should be Mary Jane?) age 13 - Scholar - Bilston

1871 Census at Hartshorne Street, Bilston, Staffs: -
Jesse Wilkinson age 66 (should be 56 or 59?) - Engineer Forge - Shrops
Mary Ann Wilkinson age 61 (should be 51 or 57?) - West Bromwich, Staffs
Mary Jane Wilkinson age 22 - Domestic Servant - Bilston
Abraham age 3 months - son of Mary Jane

1881 Census - Highfield Road, Sedgley, Staffs
John H Williams age 38 - Night Watchman - Bristol, Somerset
Mary Jane Williams age 33 - Bilston
John Henry Williams age 11 - Scholar - Bilston
Sarah Jane Williams age 2 - Scholar - Bilston
Jesse Wilkinson age 69 - Widowed - Father in law - Engineer (ED) Print says he's 60 but original says 69.
Abraham Wilkinson age 10 - step son - Scholar - Bilston

1891 Census at 17, Brook C... (can't read scribble), Bilston, Staffs - all were put down with the surname of Williams as well as being from Bilston!: -
John H Williams age 42 - Bedstead Maker
Mary Jane Williams age 41
Abraham Williams age 18 - Coal Miner
John H Williams age 14 - Scholar
Sarah Jane Williams age 13 - Scholar
George H Williams 3
Jesse Williams (should be Wilkinson) age 73 (should be 79?) Widowed Father in law - Parish Rebel? (couldn't quite read the scribble)

At the marriage of Jesse Wilkinson's eldest daughter, Ann: -
24 July 1853 • The Parish Church, Wolverhampton in the County of Stafford, Staffordshire, England
Joseph Hill - Age 24 - Bachelor - Furnace Man - lived in Sheepwash Lane - Father: Thomas Hill, also a Furnace Man. Ann Wilkinson - Age 20 - Spinister - lived in Sheepwash Lane - Father: Jesse Wilkinson, Furnace Man.

I have come across a possible baptism for Jesse but it was taken place at Burslem, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire - so what are the chances of Jesse's parents travelling to have their son baptised at Burslem?

Name:   Jesse Wilkinson
Gender:   Male
Record Type:   Baptism
Baptism Date:   29 May 1808
Baptism Place:   Burslem, Staffordshire, England
Father:   George Wilkinson
Mother:   Hannah Hulme

Hoping someone from Shropshire will be able to help?

Thanking in advance.

Many thanks and I have now seen the 1841 census. It's quite possible it is the same family or it may not be. Have tried to find a baptism for Jesse 1834 but no luck either so far. Seeing that Ann was also 7, I was kind of hoping to find it easier to find his baptism plus the fact they could be twins.

Have found a death for Jesse Wilkinson in April 1891: WILKINSON, JESSE       73
GRO Reference: 1891  J Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON  Volume 06B  Page 483

This would tie in nicely with his age on the 1891 Census.

I'm finding Censuses regarding this family are getting their ages wrong and even GRO has no records of their daughter's Mary Jane's birth, only Mary Anne's (both were baptised in 1848) and I still can't find a death for Mary Anne (born on 30th Oct 1848 and baptised on 31 Oct 1848).

Brilliant re finding a death for their mother, Mary Ann and Hartshorne Lane was where they were living at the time.  :)

Well, it wasn’t to hide the illegitimacy, As that is clearly noted.
That PR is interesting, I paged through a few pages and it seems if you were illegitimate you don’t get to have a “place of abode” whereas all the legitimate births do!
Frustrating.
