Wilson family (Legaloy, Ballynure)
« on: Sunday 15 December 19 00:32 GMT (UK) »
James Wilson (1812-54), married Margaret McKee. James was originally from the townland of Straid, though moved to Legaloy, where he and his wife had four children, one of which, James McKee Wilson
(1851-1930)  married Ruth McKinstry in 1879. James and Ruth had a family of ten. Their sons were:
John (born 1882) ;  Robert  (born 1884) ; James (born 1885) and Thomas (born 1887).

Does anyone know anything regarding this family, including the siblings of James McKee Wilson? If so, I'd appreciate your assistance.

Very very doubtful that my Wilsons have anything to do with your Wilsons as there are so many but you never know.. Mine seem to just appear in Dervock then disappear again.. Have you done a DNA test and if so with who and are you on Gedmatch?

Allister,

I was sent a history of the Wilsons recently which states James Wilson (1812-1854) was another son of Thomas Wilson and Henrietta Lennon.

Is this what you'd guessed too?

Ballymena Weekly Telegraph, 19 Jun 1942

The first annual show under the auspices of Straid Young Farmers' Club was held at Straid on Saturday .....
Close on one hundred years ago similar shows were held in the district, and on a table at the platform, for inspection, were two medals awarded in those days bearing the inscriptions - "To Jame Wilson, Strade, for Best Bull at Strade and Ballymore Cattle Show 1844" and "Royal Agricultural Improvement Society - To James Wilson, Legaloy, 1845"

BallyaltikilliganG,

Thanks for the list.  “T. Wilson” is Thomas Wilson (c1780-1847), father of John Wilson of Straid Mill (c1801-1883) and [apparently] James Wilson of Legaloy (c1812-1854), plus 8 others.

I’m not sure about the “Wm Wilson” of Straidland – it looks to me like it could be “W. Wilson” or “Mr. Wilson”.  In the second Tithe book it seems to be “Mrs. Wilson”.  If it is William, I’m not sure who he was.

Hanes teulu,

Thanks.  I wondered if that might help time James’s move to Dunturkey/Legaloy, but he is there in the Tithe book (1834).

Re. "Dunturkey/Legaloy" -

Belfast News Letter, 3 Sep 1842

"Straid and Ballynure Farming Society
Lower District - .....; Best 2 year old Heifer, Mr James Wilson, Dunturkey; 2nd best, Mr Robert Fulton: Best year old Heifer, Mr Thomas Fulton, Legaloy: 2nd best, Mr James Wilson, Legaloy; .....".

As an earlier post mentions, lots of Wilsons in this locale. So, 2 James Wilson in the area?

Yes, the place was absolutely coming down with Wilsons.

The James Wilson of Dunturkey in your snippet might be James Wilson (c1807-1867) who left his Dunturkey farm to his son John.  I believe this James was probably born in Ballylagan, but I have not identified which of the many Wilsons there were his parents.

It is useful to see there was one in Legaloy and another in Dunturkey at that time.  I think there were another 2-5 contemporaneous James Wilsons in the area, so it gets confusing.
