Joseph Miles & Mary Ann Saunders (Stroud/Chedworth)

Looking for some help with great grandparents. I have some information but mainly looking for exact birth and death dates and burial locations. Struggling on these fronts.

Great Grandfather Joseph Miles
Born 1866 Chedworth, Gloucestershire
Baptised 9th Sept 1866
Died 1895 Stroud, Gloucestershire
Had loads of brothers and sisters - Edward, William, Jane, James, Philip, Silas, George, Florence and Gertrude

Married my great grandmother on 23rd June 1894 in Stroud

Great Grandmother Mary Ann Saunders
Born abt 1867 in Stroud
Occupation - Laundress
Died 1902 in Stroud

They had two children
Albert Walter Miles ( my Grandfather) - loads of good research on him
Lily Miles ( after both parents died she was young and believed was taken to ayrshire, Scotland)
I don’t have much information on Lilly unfortunately

If anyone could fill in the blanks with DOB or Dates of Death as well as burial locations would be much obliged. Any information on Lilly would be great also. Struggling to get more information.

Is Lilly definitely Joseph's daughter. You say he died 1895. Lilian Kate Miles, mother's maiden name Saunders, is born in Stroud in 1898

In 1911 she's in an industrial school in Coventry - she may be difficult to follow after that


There are two older children with Mary in 1901 - what became of them

Can't find any birth record for Rose or Ellen as either Miles or Saunders.  I checked the image and all the children are listed as Saunders.

Good point on Lilly. There was a train of thought earlier in my research that she was a step-sister of Albert Walter Miles. Looking at the dates she can’t be Joseph Miles’ daughter as he died a few years before her birth. What throws a little confusion into the mix was that my grandfather Albert Walter Miles ( her prospective step brother) had put her down as next of kin in his 1914 army sign up papers. His parents Joseph and Mary Ann Miles (nee Saunders)we’re deceased at that point. I have a copy of this form and it was written next of kin as
Miss Lillie Miles, Moorgreen, Brookfield by Johnstone Scotland ( she was listed as a Miles ?)
Think I will need to doublecheck my facts with Lilly

This is definitely the correct Mary ann Saunders as she was listed on my grandfathers wedding certificate as living in middle hill, Stroud. I have a copy of this certificate

I also have the wedding certificate for Joseph Miles and Mary Ann Saunders where it listed her as residing at middle Hill Stroud
Mary Ann Saunders father on this was listed as William Saunders and
Joseph Miles’ father was listed as Stephen Miles

Yes, I knew I had the right Mary but couldn't understand why all the children have Saunders as their surname and no apparent birth records for Rose or Ellen who would have been born before Mary married Joseph.

Only Rose is definitely Saunders on 1901 - the rest are dittos which I have seen in the past used to mean same as head of household, even when another surname has been interpolated into the list
