John Irving and Margaret Armstrong of Hawkshall (near Canonbie) and Caulside
« on: Thursday 19 December 19 04:53 GMT (UK) »
Trying to confirm that John Irving who died at 87 years in 1858 at Caulside was the same who married  Margaret Armstrong and lived and farmed at Hawkshall during his earlier days. My wife descends from this couple and I am trying to learn more about them and their families. :)

If you have access to Ancestry there are quite a lot of tree's for this couple one has a
Memoriam intimation and they are mentioned
Margaret Armstrong died 23 November 1851 wife of John Irving died June 1858 age 87

I'm assuming you have them on the census records if not you can check 1841/1851 on
www.freecen.org.uk

These two gravestones are next to each other at Canonbie churchyard, which does confirm he had a connection with Hawkshall.

In memory of Andrew IRVING, son to Robert IRVING in Hawkshall, who was Captain of the ship "Orange Grove", died at Lagos in Africa February 25th 1791 aged 32 years. Also William IRVING who was 22 years in Jamaica died at Hawkshall January 6th 1808 aged 43 years. Also Isabell IRVING, who died 4th September 1810 aged 37 years. Also William IRVING son to John IRVING who died  - -  aged 24 years. Also Margaret ARMSTRONG who died November 23rd 1851 aged 82 years. Also John IRVING husband of the above Margaret ARMSTRONG who died June 1858 aged 87 years.

In memory of William IRVING son of John IRVING and Margaret ARMSTRONG, who died at Hawkshall 7th January 1827 aged 24 years.  Also Andrew their son who died 11 February 1867 aged 70 years.  George their son who died 1st May 1867 aged 66 years.  Robert their son who died 23rd January 1874 aged 75 years.  Thomas their son who died 21st January 1876 aged 68 years. Janet their daughter who died 11 April 1890 aged 77 years.  Margaret their daughter who died 20th December 1891 aged 87 years.

my family has a very distant connection to this Irving family, through their daughter Janet (d 1890) who had an illegitimate child by one of my ancestors.

In 1858 all it will say is 'married'. It's one of the few years (1856 to c 1860) when the spouse's name was not recorded.

Fortunately the MIs found by robbiesmum seem to have answered the question.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you for your suggestions everyone.  Yes, i have the death cert for John Irving d1858 and listed are his parents Robert Irving and Margaret Graham. I am a member of Ancestry so after some searching there and on SP it appears that this John Irving was born in Bonsham, Annan in 1740. But back to Hawkshall for now....I can't find it on ordance maps. Does anyone know where it is or was?

Think Forfarian would be the best one for finding out where it is  ;)

Well done "Mazi". I've visited the area from Canada on several occasions and now I have a new reason to visit again!  I expect nothing but rubble now but I will give it a try anyway.

Thank you for your help everyone. I will post more questions around this family once I can suitably frame a new question.
