Need some Help - James Murphy / Mary Corner from Magheralin
« on: Wednesday 25 December 19 00:35 GMT (UK) »
My 3rd Great Grandfather was from Magheralin, County Down,
James Murphy Born 1803
Death 1866 (also Magheralin)
His father was also a James Murphy but don’t have anything on him at all apart from the name

He definitely married a Mary Corner. I have traced a line of Corners emanating from Durham, England but I’m now having doubts as to whether this was the right Mary Corner or whether he married a local girl. The one I have is

Mary Corner Born 26/7/1801 in Sockburn, Durham, England
Marriage date as August 24 1828 in Magheralin
Her parents were Ralph and Elizabeth Corner (nee Parker)

The line I took was a suggested one on the ancestry website- stated the Durham Mary died in Ireland however I’m now not sure. I have traced her Durham line up a few generations but don’t want to go further until I’m sure I have the right one.

Can anyone help ?
Many thanks
Bryan

Is there anything to suggest that Mary was from England?

I found the baptism of James in 1803, and I also found a potential brother William in 1806 also to a James Murphy, I don't know if you have this?

There is also a will on ancestry for a James Murphy in Down in 1866 and the primary beneficiary is a Mary Murphy- do you have this? It might reveal more clues about both families.

It's under 'Ireland, Calendar of Wills and Administrations, 1858-1920'

Other children born to a James Murphy in Magheralin:

Mary 1797
John 1791
Sarah 1795
 (none state a mother )

I found other Corner marriages in Magheralin

William Corner 1833
Elizabeth 1839
Robert 1824

Children of Ralph Corner and Elizabeth Parker
Mary 1801
William 1809
Ralph 1807 ?
Robert 1804
Elizabeth 1805
Jane 1810

the birth dates of these children make it likely they could be the same Corners who also married in Ireland.

However I looked at marriages just in Durham and there are marriages for a Robert Corner and a Mary Corner.

Census Substitutes
1823-1837 The Tithe Applotment books see http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/down/tithe-applotment-books/magheralin-parish.php
notes
1. Ballyinagin is a typo in index for Ballymagin Ballymagin townland
2. Ballymacmaine is spelt Ballymacmean, I treat as Ballymacmaine
3. Mary Corner, my guess in 1834 is her family name was recorded as Cordner
4. Magheralin Civil Parish inc Clankilvoragh Derrylisnahavil Donagreagh in Co Armagh
5. River Lagan thru the townland of Feney/ Feny might inc a bite in Moira parish, check
6. my list for Corner? and Murphy is arranged by townland
the list
Murphy, Patrick Townland: Ballyleny Year: 1834
Murphy, John Townland: Ballymacbredin Year: 1834
Murphy, James Townland: Ballymacmean [Ballymacmaine] Year: 1834

the original in PRONI Belfast consists of occupiers name and Qty and Quality of land for tax purposes however its use discovering same named possible relations in the same townland
is thought provoking.

In the present day, the name has evolved into 'Cordner', and there are still families in Magheralin district of that name, in the townlands of Kilmore & Drumnacairn/Drumnykerne.

Same place, as with many townland names the spellings can vary.   Often the original meanings of names are obscured because they were written down by English scribes with no idea of Gaelic spelling rules. For example, it appears as 'Drumnykerne' , 'Drumnacairn and even as 'Dromonikeherny' in various documents.  https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/9b31e0501b744154b4584b1dce1f859b/page/Place-Name-Info/#data_s=id%3AdataSource_1-PlaceNames_Gazeteer_No_Global_IDs_3734%3A25562
