His medal card is at the National Archives which shows he qualified for the 1914/1915 Star, the British War and Victory medals.  It shows also that he entered France on 27 October 1915 (the battalion were already there).  https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D2543162#imageViewerLink  (use the image preview to see it or download it for £3.50.

The war diary for his battalion doesn't name him but the entry on 14 Apr 1916 reads:
The enemy blew a camouflet (mine) in front of our lines at 6 pm, one man was killed and two who went to rescue him (slight variance from the newspaper) were gassed by fumes  The war diary can be downloaded from the National Archives at:
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7354513
This took place while the battalion were in trenches in the vicinity of Camblain l'Abbe to the north west of Arras.

His medal card and the Effects register on Ancestry have been mentioned for which you need a subscription or access at a library perhaps.  The war diary is also on Ancestry.

Wow, thanks so much Max! This is really interesting!

Would the diary be available on findmypast? I've got a full subscription to that. Thank you

FindMyPast doesn't have war diaries.  The only records they have for GGrandad are a link to the medal card at the National Archives and to his Commonwealth War Graves entry (both already quoted) and a reference to the publication "Soldiers Died in the Great War".

The war diary can be downloaded from the National Archives for £3.50 (already quoted) but is on Ancestry at
 http://www.rootschat.com/links/01orl/

For completeness Ancestry has:

His medal card
His medal roll entries (one for the 1914/1915 Star, the other for the British War and Victory medals)
His entry in the Effects Register and the Soldiers Died entry.
A pension record card (for his wife) is on Ancestry but in the Fold3 area which requires an extra subscription
These are all listed here:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01orm/

His battalion was part of 46 (North Midland) Division.  Google will find you a number of histories of the division which would put the Lincolns war in context.  Check the dates covered given that GGrandad was with them in France from October 1915 to April 1916.

His service record itself has not survived (60% or so were lost to bombing in WW2).  From his number though we can say he joined up, as a volunteer, in March/April of 1915.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

You can contact the archives in Lincoln or visit if you are local.
I found some interesting things there about my Grandad also in Lincoln regiment.
