When and where did John P. Hanson die?
« on: Sunday 29 December 19 22:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find the final fate of John P. Hanson. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on 28 July 1914, the son of Charles I. and Nora (nee Buckley) Hanson. He served in the Army Air Corps in WWII, (ASN#32518092, enlisted at Ft Jay, Governor's Island, NY on 2 October 1942). In May of 1943 he is a sergeant, training as an aerial gunner in Colorado. On 4 February 1944 his crew was shot down and he was taken prisoner, returning to the US in May of 1945.

His father,  a Swedish Hudson River tugboat captain, died on January 31, 1952. In his obit, he is listed as "devoted father of John P., Carl F., Joseph W. and the late Timothy A(ugust)" He is interred at St Charles Cemetery, Pine Lawn, NY, as are Nora and Timothy. Timothy and Carl were both paratroopers in the war with the 101st Airborne. Timothy passed away suddenly at the family home, 1961 Coleman St, Brooklyn, in May 1946.

The family moved to Park Ridge, NJ around 1950.

Nora, originally from Co. Cork, Ireland, died on February 7, 1986 at age 100 and her obituary says "Surviving are two sons, Carl of Mount Arlington and Joseph W. of Park Ridge" so presumably John P. has died sometime between 1952 and 1986. Carl passed away in New Jersey May 1989; Joseph W. in 1997

Grateful for any help.

There's a 1946 newspaper article that refers to a Jack Hanson from the same address in Brooklyn getting into the frozen food business with some war buddies.  Seems like that could be John, so maybe the nickname/business is another angle for searching.

There is a reference to a late Jack Hanson in Brooklyn from a 20 Jun. 1959 newspaper.  https://www.newspapers.com/clip/41299078/

The New York City death index has a John Hanson who died at age 44 on 28 May 1959 outside of the city.  Seems like a possibility.

Charles' obit says his requiem Mass was at St. Thomas Aquinas, so that fits too.

I think these two are the same person

If I'm reading and applying the NJ place codes correctly on the NJ death index, John P Hanson died Dover, Morris County, NJ (code:1418), but was a residence of New York (code:9131).

Dover is about 8 miles southeast of Mount Arlington, Morris County which is where his brother Carl F lived.

Using the 1st four digits listed on the NJ death index codes determines place/location.

Residence: 91319 (out of state code)
