Can't find Gilbert Wilson on 1939 census :(
« on: Friday 03 January 20 13:57 GMT (UK) »
My fiance's grandfather was Gilbert Wilson from Hull, he married Edna Glenville in 1945 (in Hull) who had previously been married to John Dore. They had a son named Glen. Nothing is known about Gilbert, who is believed to have been in the SAS. I have found a 1918 birth entry with mums maiden name Mawson that maybe him in Sculcoates (the birth year taken from probable death entry), I have ordered marriage cert today so obviously not received it yet. I just can't find any record of him and nobody else seems to be researching this Wilson side. Would World War 1 /SAS records exist? I have an Ancestry sub but not the international one. Thankyou.

If Gilbert was already in the Forces in 1939, then he will not appear on the Register.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I have found a 1918 birth entry with mums maiden name Mawson that maybe him in Sculcoates (the birth year taken from probable death entry),

Gilbert Wilson b 6 Sep 1918 died aged 76 Jul 1995, death registered in Hull RD
Register Number:   D46A, District and Subdistrict: 5502D, entry 223

His marriage certificate will be of help, hopefully giving his father's name & occupation and maybe the witnesses were family members

FreeBMD has two other male WILSON/MAWSON births registered in Sculcoates 1923 & 1924

Have you looked on FreeBMD for a possible Wilson/Mawson marriage?

Yes, cant find a suitable Mawson/Wilson marriage. Did see the Leslie and Stanley Wilson births that I've kept as possibles. Thankyou.

Gilbert's 1918 marriage was at St Andrew, Drypool - unfortunately FindMyPast marriages only go to 1917.

My parents marriage is on FindMyPast and they didn't meet until after WW2, why do you think marriage info stops at 1917?
