George James
« on: Thursday 09 January 20 03:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I was wondering if anyone can see any reference to George James's (b 1908) father or Mothers maiden name. The marriage I'm looking at is in 1920 to Nellie V Nicklin in Staffordshire. I'm trying to make certain he's the correct George James as there are quite a few born the same time in the same area. I can't seem to find any details of the marriage other than the date and the participants. I was hoping to see the mothers maiden name or grooms father etc, without purchasing the cert, which I will do if I'm fairly certain its my George James

Thanks in advance for any advice or info - richard

On a British marriage certificate you won't see the mother's name only the father's.

You will probably have to buy the certificate to find out his father's name.

I'll see if I can find George in the 1939 Register for a date of birth, but he may have gone to fight in the Second World War so won't be on there.

I have found the family on the 1939 Register and George was not born in 1908.  Based  on the date of birth given and assuming he was born in Staffordshire this may well be his birth.

JAMES, GEORGE       UNDERWOOD
GRO Reference: 1894  M Quarter in STOKE UPON TRENT  Volume 06B  Page 209

This looks to be the parents marriage:-

Marriages Sep 1892
JAMES    Thomas        Stoke upon Trent    6b   246
Underwood    Sarah        Stoke T.    6b   246

However to be really sure you would need to get George's marriage certificate for his father's name.

I was trying to get evidence the marriage of George and Nellie was in fact the right George, without buying the wedding cert, I guess I'll have to, just to satisfy myself , thanks again

On a British marriage certificate you won't see the mother's name only the father's.

That's not totally correct. Mother's names do appear on Scottish marriage certificates.
