Esser - tracing family back to Germany - help!
« on: Thursday 09 January 20 18:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am new to the forum - but wondered if anyone has any advice for me

I am trying to find out where my Great Great Grandfather came from in Germany.

His name is Bernhard Albert Esser (sometimes known as Albert), born 05/05/1851 in Germany. He married Mercy Ann Temple in Chertsey, Surrey in 1879. On their marriage certificate his father is listed as Balthasar Esser from Germany and his occupation is described as a Gentleman. They had two children, Renee Mercy and Leonard Charles.

Unfortunately his wife died in 1886 and the children went to live with their maternal grandparents. I can then find no record of him, until 1901, when he appears in the census as living in Newington, London.

I have not been able to find anything to indicate where he came from in Germany, despite checking census records, immigration records etc.

I would be very grateful for any suggestions of where I could look next.

Many thanks in advance.

Two mentions of Prussia, including: Joseph Bernhard b 24/11/1831 from Banau,Frankenstein,Breslau,Silesia,Prussia (Preussen in German),married to Augusta Kubierschke.
Found the attached tree on FamilySearch.
