McLaughlin and Brogan marriage Donegal
« on: Saturday 11 January 20 09:56 GMT (UK) »
Looking for some help with a marriage between Daniel McLaughlin and Catherine Brogan who had the following two children in Dunfanaghy district: John in 1870 Knocknafaugher (father a labourer); and Patrick in 1872 Carrownamaddy (father a shepherd, informant Giles Brogan who looks to have died 1883 in Knocknafaugher age 90 and a widow).

From possible deaths for Daniel (1895 Creenasmear age 65 yrs married farmer) and Catherine (1918 Cashelilly age 80 widow of farmer) their YOBs could be 1830 and 1838 which may put a marriage year at c. 1855 onwards.

I’ve looked through the Irish civil records, including the new release of marriages back to 1845, but can’t find this couple. Also can’t find anything in England/Wales although there’s a marriage for Patrick McLaughlin and Catherine Brogan in 1897 in Glasgow Anderston - but that would be after Daniel McLaughlin died in 1895 in Creenasmear.

Any other ideas welcome.

Many thanks,
Flemming.

Religion?

RC Marriages only start 1864

I can't see it either. Marriage entries for any Catherine Brogan start at 1864 and so you're probably right about the marriage being RC. At least I know - many thanks!

John's birth has Anne McLoughlin as informant
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1870/03360/2231896.pdf

which leads to this possible marriage of Anne dtr of Daniel in 1880

unfortunately the priest didnt record her mothers name

1901 she says she's 30 but she would have to have been born circa 1860 in order to marry in 1880

1911 looks better with her mother

Do you mean Daniel's daughter Ann would be the informant for her brother's birth - wouldn't she have been 10 yrs old at the time (unless she was really fibbing about her age)? Or do you mean Ann is a name used by the family?

It's an interesting entry because Ann married Anthony Barr who was informant of Catherine McLauglin's death in 1918 - which all ties in with your 1911 census entry.

So it looks as though Daniel and Catherine had daughter Ann c. 1860 which puts their marriage pre-1864.

Many thanks for all that. Another branch on the tree!
