Information on the Trelfa surname
« on: Wednesday 15 January 20 09:32 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for information on the surname Trelfa, which seems to be fairly indigenous to Cheshire. Mary Trelfa, an ancestor of mine, was born in Church Minshull in 1740 to William Trelfa, but I can't seem to trace the line further back.

Is this surname perhaps a spelling variation of a more common surname? I can't find any information on its origins or etymology.

Thanks in advance.

Find my Past has a burial for John Trelfa in Church Minshull in 21 June 1816, he was aged 81. That puts his year of birth as 1735.

His Will is online and it shows he lived in Minshull Vernon and he was a Farmer. It names his children as John Trelfa, Samuel Trelfa, Richard Trelfa, Elizabeth Johnson and Jane Hulse.

There are masses of entries for people by the name of Trelfa in Church Minshulland Middlewich, plus a number of places in that area. Like you have found, the entries seem to begin about 1730.

One of the local authors, Frank Latham, did a series of books on the villages in Cheshire and he has done on The History of Church Minshull and Wettenhall. These tend to be out of print now but most of the libraries in Cheshire keep them. The Cheshire archives would hold a copy as well. I am sure there would be something on the Trelfa family in this book.

By the look of information on Genuki, there are parish registers available for years prior to the 1700s.

Image for the 1758 marriage is available on FindMyPast.  Ralph was a Husbandsman, and both were of the parish of Over.

Father's names are not shown at this time.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

History Lives says father was William - but I have never found Marys father - but

I would think that has to be her with father as John ??   not a common name - so I wonder if I can find a marriage of John Trelfa on Cheshire Parish Records Database - this should be fun ...lol  ...by the way - History Lives and I have the same 5 x G Grandparents on the Oakes family -Ralph Oakes and Mary Trelfa ... I am an Oakes  :)
