Son of William Mortimer of Gomersall
« on: Monday 20 January 20 06:05 GMT (UK) »
:D Can anyone please tell me if the dates used in Parish Records from the 1600's are in Latin or Old English? I am trying to establish the date on which William, son of William Mortimer of Gomersall was baptised. I hope it says August 1631 or 1632. It is the third one down on the image attached.

The clip you have posted doesn’t give you the year date.

‘William the sonne of William Mortymer’ was baptised the xxvijth - that's the 27th day of........... I think I can just make out an ‘Au..’ squeezed in on the line below these numbers, so presumably August.
The baptism on the next line, of Elizabeth Blagburne seems to be the iij Sept - so the 3rd of September.

Dates are written in Latin numerals. The last ‘1’ is always written as a ‘j’.

To find the year, you’d need yo go back either to the top of the page, or to where April starts previous to this August. The new year started in April at this time.

Many thanks Goldie. I can find the year easily, it was the date that had me stumped. Much appreciated and thanks for the explanation on how you managed it.

Joan
