There is a Frances Harriet Torlesse on the New Zealand electoral rolls of 1896.  She is residing at 238 Gloucester Street, Christchurch.  Her occupation is stated as being deaconess.

Canterbury is over two hours drive away from Christchurch, so may be not the Frances who signed the
book.

There is a baptism for a Frances Harriet Torlesse on 27 September 1839 at Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk.
Parents are Charles and Catherine.

Thanks for all the attempts.     The book in question belonged to my grandmother who was born in London in 1891.    I don't know where she got it, or whether the person who signed the book was even known to her.    But, as you have done, I wanted to Google the name to see what came up.
