Drowned in the English Channel on FreeBMD?

Would this death be on FreeBMD?

I found on Welsh Newspapers online what looks to be the Drowning death of my 3rd Great Grandfather on 8 Feb 1869. The information on his father and his Uncle matches what I have on this lot, including the farm name.

"The Merthyr Telegraph and General Advertiser for the Iron Districts of South Wales, 27th February 1869.
"On the 8th instant, drowned after the collision of the steamship Calcutta, from London, with the barque Emma, from Cardiff, in the English Channel, Mr. Edward Lewis, engineer. He was the second son of the late Mr. Edward Lewis, superannuated Excise Officer, of Pontnewydd, Gellygaer, and nephew to Mr. Thomas Lewis, of Tairlan Farm, in the parish of Merthyr. He was 41 years of age, and has left a widow and a large family."."

There is no mention of a burial in the newspaper, I think if the body was not found there will be no death cert.

The collision was widely reported in the newspapers

Warder and Dublin Weekly Mail, Sat 13 Feb 1869

" .... 47 are accounted for, leaving 21 unaccounted for - about the number who would be in the lifeboat which was washed ashore at Mullion".

I did copy a couple of the newspapers reports about the collision.

So no body, no Death registration?

Not unless the widow went to court after 7 years to have legally declared dead.

His widow did remarry in 1871.

Seven weeks later Lieutenant Commander Esmonde's body, still in his lifejacket, was washed ashore in the Thames Estuary near the River Medway. Esmonde was buried in the Woodlands Cemetery, Gillingham, Kent on 30 April 1942.

Leader of the Swordfish aircraft that took off 12 February 1942 to attack German Battleships. His body was found in England but no record of him on Free BMD. I wonder why?
