I can see on Ancestry that he was born in Northumberland 1860 and is listed in 'UK, Apprentices Indentured in Merchant Navy, 1824-1910'

Adding to what MatthewJ24 has said.  Kenneth was born at Newcastle on Tyne and as far as I can see from the Indenture records the vessel was called "MIRANDA"

May I please ask some questions  :)

;D are you sure he deserted in NSW and in early 1878.   ....  I cannot find any mention in the 1878 NSW police Gazette 1 Jan to 31 May.
;D what are the given names of his parents ... often these are displayed at the online indexes for deaths.  ...

As yet, I have not found your lad after Feb 1878.

But  :D

I can find him as an Apprentice on the Barque Miranda, under James TYREE, Master, 455 tons,  arriving to Sydney NSW, 13 March 1877, from Cirebon, Java on 12 January.  No passengers. http://marinersandships.com.au/1877/03/media/045mir.jpg

Newspaper has this as Captain TYREN, and Colonial Sugar Company, agents.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/162682902  Sydney Mail 17 March 1877 page 234.

Mariners and ships in Australian Waters  https://marinersandships.com.au/  the search engine allows for searches by name of ship and/or year and/or month as well as by surname etc.

I cannot see Miranda in NSW waters in February 1878 http://marinersandships.com.au/1878/02/7802.htm

From the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate April 1877

The barque Miranda headed for Newcastle from Sydney to load coal for Singapore

Captain James Tyrer will not be responsible for any debts...etc...while in this port

I've looked at the original and I read it as

Miranda 14/2 1876 - 19/4 1877
deserted at Newcastle NSW per c 2/78

The 14/2 date is in the 1876 column and the 19/4 date is in the 1877 column, which fits with the Miranda being in Newcastle in April 1877.

I would guess the 'per c 2/78' may mean 'per communication 2/78'?
