James Mack Smith
« on: Friday 31 January 20 01:47 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace what became of two of my Gt Grandmothers brothers.  James Mack or Meck Smith born 29/2/1888 and John born 1885.  They were born in Glasgow but moved to the Isle of Man c1896.  I know my Gt Grandmother moved back and lived in Govan sometime between 1904 and 1914, before going back to IOM.
Her brothers may have also returned to Scotland?
They may have joined the Navy but I know nothing of them after the 1901 Census in Ramsey IOM where they lived with their Mother Lilias Smith b1858 in Muckairn.
Their Father was Thomas Smith, born 1860 Old Monklands, Engine Fitter.  I believe they lived in Toll Cross just before going to IOM in 1896 and my Gt Grandmother married in Govan.
Did they die in WW1?
Can anyone help please?

Just for accuracy, Thomas Smith married a Lillian Niven, not a Lilias Smith.

In 1911, Lillian, as head of house, states she was born Glasgow (albeit this isn't necessarily correct).

Are you certain on James birth date? I'm not immediately seeing a James M*ck Smith birth entry on Scotlandspeople for that year. Did he have any other middle name? I can see that his siblings born in Isle of Man had two or three middle names.

Who was the father of the grandchild Thomas Smith, born Isle of Man and aged 6yrs at 1911? Could it have been either of the brothers James or John?

Then possible births, albeit withouth M*ck, unless it came third in the second chaps name:

SMITH
JAMES
M
1888
652/2 224
Coatbridge or Old Monkland

SMITH
JAMES GILCHRIST
M
1888
652/2 72
Coatbridge or Old Monkland

The parents married in district, so a  Coatbridge birth could fit..

The preview shows parents Thomas and what is possibly Lilias or Lillian, so a good match.  Also, first card seems to be a 1915 record, with dates beyond that on 2nd card.. Can just about make out an address of 12 McDougall Street, Parkhead, Glasgow. I think his middle name reads 'Meek'.

Ok, using Meek rather than M*ck:

SMITH
JAMES MEEK
M
1888
652/1 68
Old Monkland (Western District

and, sadly, a relatively young death for checking, albeit age a bit out:

SMITH
JAMES MEEK
28
1922
644/1 1351
Bridgeton

1915 Valuation Rolls had a James Smith and a John Smith (as well as other names, assume it was a tenement) listed at 12 McDougall Street.

Some years street is McDougall, others MacDougall. The latter seems to be current spelling.
