Gt Yarmouth Cab Drivers
« on: Monday 03 February 20 17:19 GMT (UK) »
I am not sure if this is the correct forum but I attach a family photo in which my great grandfather appears but no one knows which one he is. I don't know the date of the photo but obviously some of the licence numbers can be read. Can anyone suggest who I can approach regarding cab licence records? Any guidance would be appreciated.

Oops not sure how to upload the whole photo. There are three other readable licence numbers, 52, 169 and 250.

Try the Great Yarmouth Council at this email

enquiries@great-yarmouth.gov.uk

This site has an option to apply for a taxi license, so hopefully they have the records going back many years.

These could be the men that offer Horse and Landau rides along Gt Yarmouth seafront.

Probably also licensed by the council.

The full picture is there, try the slider along the bottom of the photo.

The chaps look to be of differing ages in the photo, maybe you could work out which one is likely to be yours by the age if you know what year he was born?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos

Unfortunately I don’t know the year of the photo so guessing ages would be difficult. He was killed in an accident in 1916 at the age of 60, he was driving a delivery cart, was thrown and the wheel went over him. If he was doing that sort of general work maybe the horse and landau rides is a possibility. Will follow up tomorrow. Thanks

The two and half inch collar that one of the men is wearing was popular between the years of 1908 and 1911.

Had a quick reply from the Council licensing dept, no joy they have no records going back that far. Will try the County Hall archives. Thanks for the hint re date.

Like I said...the one gent's collar is a good indication of the fashion at that time, I doubt that you will get any closer than that.
