army recruitment in ireland WW1
« on: Wednesday 05 February 20 12:28 GMT (UK) »
Having difficulty in identifying which Maryborough - Laois or Cork - was the one in which at least one of my ancestors joined up, c. 1910-1914.  Can anyone help?

Laois had a barracks in Maryborough (Portlaoise), Cork had Victoria Barracks (Collins) on the Old Youghal road.
Where was you ancestor from?

I don't see a barracks at Maryborough Cork, there is a house

My ancestor, Patrick Ducie, signed up in Maryborough in 1915 - looks like Laois.
Thanks.

There are two Patrick Ducie in the 1901 Census and still at home in the 1911 Census.
One from Dublin (Kingstown) and one from Carlow.
Do you know if one of these was yours?

Mine is from Carlow - and I've checked all his military records.  They didn't tell me where Maryborough was located and I couldn't remembermy geography.
