Dec 1919 births are possibly registered under 1920 so won't be released until next year.
The only John McCarthy showing for Dec 1919 doesn't have a mother's maiden name of Murphy and isn't available to view yet.

Still no luck find Joseph's birth or 1901 Census.

He moved to West Bromwich Staffs Eng. Married Lillian Painter.

That is where you have a problem!  Born 2 days before New Year, in that his Birth was most likely Registered in early 1920 and only Registered Births up to end of 1919 are online!

Could this be the 1919 Dec birth for John McCarthy with mother's maiden name McCarthy.

I'm a bit concerned because this couple don't appear to have any children after 1913, could they have moved?
Something just doesn't feel right...
