I did find a W.T. MacGregor on a Ship's Passenger List going out to Beira, Mozambique in 1913. The age is a bit out (says b. 1871). However, his last permanent residence was given as Scotland, and intended country of residence was to be Rhodesia, which is where my great-grandfather was employed as a Railway clerk by then, so it's a possibility to consider. This William's occupation was also given as Railway clerk.

I'll see if I can find a death for Maria on FindMyPast or FamilySearch then if all else fails, invest in some more credits and do a search on S.P.

Wow, I'm stunned! Thanks to all of you, I'm finally getting somewhere with William. He's been a huge brick wall for a very long time.

I tracked Maria in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census returns, but had no luck finding her and William in the 1901 census, so having the 1911 info is wonderful. What a surprise to see that William's son Ian was a surgeon - I've suddenly acquired a shed-load of medical people in my family tree, as William's eldest sister's daughter married a doctor, and his own family is rife with them!

Oh, hurray, thank you, Rosie! FindMyPast has evidently lost them somewhere along the line as I looked for Maria for quite a while this morning. I've just dug up the announcement, in 1923, of an impending marriage for Ian (of 13 Dundas Street, which I think tallies with that Electoral roll entry you found earlier) and a Peggy Thomson of Valleyfield, Helensburgh. The penny has also just dropped that the "G.M. MacKenzie, niece," who was the informant on William's sister Margaret's death record, must be Gladys Maria, so this is turning out to be a very good day indeed!!!
