Is that the right year? This is from the Stamford Mercury of 3 December 1852:

My great-great grandfather suffered the same fate in 1851. He was also John with a son John.
By coincidence, his cousin lived in Hayle, Cornwall, where the Polly sank.

There are two more-detailed accounts in the Royal Cornwall Gazette, 26 November 1852, and The Cornish Telegraph, 30 November 1852.

WRECK AT HAYLE, AND LOSS OF LIFE.--On Wednesday morning half-past six o’clock, whilst blowing a complete gale 'from the south-west, the Polly, of Boston, John Payne, master, of about 150 tons burden, laden with rock salt and lead ore, and bound from Liverpool to Harglen (Haarlem in the other report), Holland, struck on the Hayle sands, and in a few hours became a total wreck.
 etc.
Non of the bodies have been found. On the flowing of the tide the vessel went to pieces, and the wreck has been sold by J. N. Tremearne, Esq., agent for Lloyd's. - At S. Ives a great many vessels have been inside the pier for shelter, but no damage has been sustained by any of them.

Thanks Shaun J, must have got the date wrong, interesting as one of the crew was a Knott as there is a grave stone with 4 Knott's mariners all died at sea, John Knott drowned in the river Thames, Thomas lost at sea in the Bristol Channel, father Thomas lost at sea off Scarbrough, Henry lost of Dimlington. The youngest son William put the stone up but he was also lost on the way to Rangoon when he was mate on the Buckinghamshire.

I think John Payne's widow was Susannah Payne of Albert Street, Spalding. Her 1889 probate calendar entry identifies a nephew John George Barratt, innkeeper, and a great nephew Cornelius Dalrymple Hall, auctioneer. Other executors were Kate Hayes, wife of Robert Arthur Hayes, and Harold Stanley Maples, solicitor.

Hi DCB, Thanks for that, if you look at my reply to ShuanJ you will see the grave stone or rather memorial in Spalding Cemetery says Thomas Knott was lost at sea in the Bristol Channel which is a fair way from Hayle.
