Can you locate William Forster in 1911?
« on: Monday 17 February 20 23:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi. I'm trying to locate William Forster, born about 1875, who lived in South Shields. He appears in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses, living at home with his parents (William and Elizabeth) and siblings in Curry Street, Jarrow.

Between 1901 and 1911, I believe both of his parents died. I cannot find either William or his sister Dorothy (born about 1878) in 1911 anywhere. I thought maybe William died too, but I cannot find any convincing candidate for someone by his name dying in that time of the right age.

At some point in the 1880s, this family decided to start calling themselves Foster as opposed to Forster, so I have tried looking for both Fosters and Forsters but to no avail either. I would be super grateful for any fresh perspectives on this.

Edit: should also mention that all three censuses also give Jarrow as his birth place (same with sister Dorothy).

I was wondering if this might be the same William?
In 1939 there is a William Foster in Hebburn.
He is 74, born 2 May 1874
He is a platers helper which would match with an apprentice plater on an earlier census.
He is single.

I think that's a good possibility for Dorothy, thanks Jamjar. I did see a Dorothy Ann Forster who got married in South Shields in 1903, but would be inclined to say it's not her as no prior mention of a middle name and a return to Forster from Foster.

Also thanks for the helpful citations.

You may be right! I missed that one on my searches. Nice spot on the occupation. If so, looks like he died in September 1941 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVCW-PJ14

Still a bit puzzled by the 1911 absence then, unless he was out of the country or something?
