I have 2 entries from New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896 re John BOYD and his wife Elizabeth - from Leith, Scotland, arrived Sydney, NSW 21 April 1840 on the ship "CLYDE" as part of the A B Smith Bounty Scheme.

Great to have, but some of the handwriting is not easy to decipher  ???

We have ideas on the wording, the main issue is the name of John BOYD's mother ...?
This section - "A native of Leith Scotland - Son of Jno Ship Carpenter same place, and ? ? ? ? ? ? his wife there."

Any assistance would be welcome.  :)

2 image files attached.

Thanks in advance.

Family Search have two possible names for mother and they are Ewam or Eileen.

There is a baptism on Scotland's People for a John Boyd on 15th November 1801 in Leith.  Parents are listed as John Boyd and Helen MacLeish.

The image on Family Search is just a typed form.

I was wondering whether the name begins with a "C". The capital letters are not particularly consistent and this one isn't a million miles away from the first letter in "Clyde".

But what would that make the name?  ???
Cirain? Ciaran? Ciram?  ::)

Thanks for your thoughts Girl Guide and Karen McDonald
Ewam was all we could come up with but nowhere can I find anything like that anywhere.
I see it on the form on familysearch and it looks like a guess by whoever transcribed the written paperwork
I was hoping that it could possibly be a Gaelic/Scottish version of Helen - or even Eileen.
Maybe someone with Scottish blood (!) and background can advise me if that could be possible.
I have also tried for a Marriage using John or Jno BOYD but nothing comes up for either Ewam or Eileen.
The marriage between John BOYD and Helen McCleish (McLeish) and the birth of John to them are details I am hoping will match the John BOYD on the Bounty Immigration Scheme.
It would have been perfect if the Bounty paperwork showed John's parents as Jno and Helen......
Thanks again.

Hello Barb.

#1 There are lists of unusual names of that period that can be found on line.

#2. Don't be put off by what appears to be a predominantly male given/christian name, being bestowed upon a female, in that period of time, in Scotland.

In our family tree is a woman born in 1796 with a single baptism name recorded, that is usually a surname or male given name.

Because the format adopted by the clerk of her parish records was eg:- "XXXXXX 3rd lawful child of ...." and not the more common; "XXXXXX lawful daughter of ...." through time, transcribers of that baptism record, have seen fit to arbitrarily assign "F" when faced with a spreadsheet column for sex.

That woman went to her grave still using her single [male] christian name.

PS. Also if not familiar with the brogue, quite often Helen was recorded as Ellen.  We have and old granny who went through life insisting her name was 'Ellen"  with an "H".

Alan.

I wonder this is a case of mis- hearing the name of the wife?? Helen, and Eirinn for example
are quite similar ?

Thank you Fresh Fields, liz57 and Jamjar for your suggestions.
I have checked a lot of lists without anything looking like Ewam – google always says “did you mean Ewan? “
So – anything is possible.

The name definitely could have been mis-heard...

I Haven't found a Death Registration for him. :(

India, Select Deaths and Burials, 1719-1948
Name:    John Peter
Gender:    Male
Age:    42
Birth Date:    1800
Burial Date:    29 Dec 1842
Burial Place:    Colabah, Bombay, India
FHL Film Number:    523842

The 1842 burial register records that he was a seaman on the ship Hastings.

I don’t have findmypast so unable to check for any further details.
I have tried to locate something on the ship Hastings but so far no success.
There is not even anything in the 2 above records that say he was even Scottish..!

We hope it is him, but at this stage just have to say “possibly”.
