Marriages and baptisms in Bath Abbey (18th Cent)
« on: Monday 24 February 20 14:59 GMT (UK) »
Is there any significance to having married or got baptised in Bath Abbey or was it just some people's local church?  like St Michael's or St James.

I am wondering whether it indicated a level of prestige - status, wealth etc.

Many thanks

It was pretty much destroyed during the reformation and eliz.the first had it rebuilt as the parish church of Bath.

Thanks - I didn't know that.

I have an ancestor, Henry FISHER who lived in Walcot and married Ann BISHOP from St Michaels parish but they married in Bath Abbey in 1778.

I am wondering why they would marry there.
