Hi Sandra
I already had the obituary for Ambrose but I thank you for sending it.  Whilst I was looking for newspaper articles on Ambrose I came across the one attached referring to the 'will' of George M Dowling.

With regards to the Ellis Island passenger records: I located a Geo and Jas Dowling on the Manhattan, same details but for 1860, could not locate 1869?

I have systematically searched all of the children individually starting with Ambrose as it seems an unusual first name but no details found, in fact it is only Sarah I have located a record for.

I thought I had found a record for Mary (wife of George) same age etc but she was travelling with William Dowling (same age as George) on the ship Tripoli arrived Jan 1 1869.

Possible.
Ship Manhattan arriving New York 17 November 1869 left from England
George Dowling 22
Jas Dowling 16

both are listed as laborers, the ages match those of 1861 census but no other family mentioned.
ADDED
Just read Sandra's post so not the same family.

George is listed under Geo Dowling
