Truro Cathedral - local knowledge needed.
« on: Saturday 29 February 20 04:16 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone happen to know - after the parish church of St Mary was replaced by Truro Cathedral in the late 1800s, what happened to the graves and memorial plaques which were in the old church?

I have several ancestors who were buried in the chancel of the parish church in the 1600s and I am hoping that at least some memorials survive.

First thought - ask the Cathedral - they do have a website with contact details.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Nice link - thank you.

I found a different e-mail address last year and wrote to it, but had no response.  I'll try info  (at)  trurocathedral.org.uk to see if I have more luck.

Very interesting - it does prove that at least some monuments were retained.  Unfortunately none of the "Principal monuments include....." are of my ancestors (they were yeomen merchants, not the top tier of society).

Now all I need is a list or set of images.  Maybe one exists somewhere.

I had a reply - yay!

Unfortunately (according to the verger), if there ever were any wall plaques or grave slabs for my ancestors they did not survive in the new Cathedral.  Memorials to the ROBARTES family survive - but they are not my ancestors.  :(

Ah well, off to Kresen Kurnow to buy more wills.

The preface to the Devon & Cornwall Record Society transcript of Truro PRs up to 1837 (published 1940) suggests there may be more than I was told by the verger.  Hmmmmm.

"The north transept, the south aisle, and the crypt of the Cathedral now contain the monuments which were in the earlier Church."

Philip,
FamilySearch has Cornish wills for free

https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/329778?availability=Family%20History%20Library

I have recently looked at over 50 Grigg wills/admons - would have cost me a small fortune with Kresen Kurnow.

Steve
ps - why did everyone in North Cornwall leave a will?- or perhaps I have finally found some middling "toffs"  :D
