Looking for marriage Samuel BRATT & Mary (?) 1780-1785 range
« on: Saturday 29 February 20 16:07 GMT (UK) »
I have a Samuel Bratt and wife "Mary" baptizing children in Rotherhithe parish beginning in 1784.
It appears Samuel dies in 1811, Mary in 1836 they were still in Rotherhithe at the time of their deaths.
Samuel would have been born circa 1760 range.
I have not been able to find their marriage nor any reference to Mary's last name
though.
I am thinking they may not have been originally from the Surrey area and perhaps moved after their marriage.
Any sleuths able to find their marriage in Rotherhithe or pick them up elsewhere?
Thanks

Do you have evidence to support the birth year for Samuel as around 1760?   It could have been a second marriage,  surely?

Have you looked on free reg?  The majority of baptisms for Samuel Bratts are in Staffordshire, or the northern part of England.

There is a Samuel Burt born at St Mary Magdalene, Richmond in Surrey, 1761.

On free reg you can search by soundex, but very few marriages in counties around Surrey of a Mary to a Samuel with a surname that looks remotely like Bratt.

Thank you for the help

I believe the Samuel Hugh Bratt who died 1811, listed in the St. Mary's Rotherhithe, Surrey burials is the guy I am seeking.  On the burial he was listed as being aged 51.  So his birth would be around 1760.  That is what I based the his age on.

The last name "Bratt" does have the possibly of being transcribed a variety of interesting ways in the various documents.  This couple Samuel & Mary, from what I have found, had only daughters that lived into adulthood... their two sons died as infants so their surname dies off in this family.

And tracking the daughters has been a bit of hit and miss too!

It is quite possible that Samuel and Mary came from outside Surrey as I said in the initial post - perhaps as Mckha489 found?

I will follow it up in Warwickshire and see what I can see.  Perhaps check on baptizing children there too.

I appreciate the hand

Warwickshire is a long way from Rotherhithe.

I would tend to think that for some reason he was either not baptised, or the baptism is not on-line, or the register is not legible.

This one is a little nearer London
Samuel Brett  baptised 13th April, 1760 at Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire.
Father: Richard Brett  Mother: Anna

Yes, I do know these two places are quite a distance apart.
But there is always that possibility that Samuel Bratt and his wife Mary came to Surrey from somewhere else.

The marriage that was found in 1760, in Wootton Wawen, that couple seemed to have had at least one child baptized, Elizabeth in 1783 in Beaudesert, and possible burial of a son, Samuel, in Wootton Wawen in Jul 1783.

Then nothing more that I can find on them in the surrounding parishes.  The last name is a problem as I am sure it has many interesting spellings!

And of course nothing is proof until it is ;)
