Bottings in Fletching
« on: Saturday 07 March 20 12:36 GMT (UK) »
Can someone double check two marriages for me?

Firstly can someone check for a marriage in May 1766 for John Botting and Sarah Barden. I am trying to clarify what her name is as I have seen it transcribed as Barden, Bardon and even Barton. Could these all be variations of her name?

Secondly I'm hoping someone can help locate a marriage for John Botting's father, also called John.

I am trying to locate a marriage for John Botting and a woman named Sarah some time prior to 1736 in the Fletching area. John and Sarah had seven children between 1736/37 and 1749/50

The children I have for them are as follows:

Sarah - March 1736/37
John - January 1738/39 [who married Sarah Barden]
Mary - March 1740/41
Richard - February 1742/43
Elizabeth - August 1746
Hannah - December 1748
Ann - January 1749/50

All were christened in Fletching, Sussex.

Thanks for any ideas.

Matt

Hi Matt
All I can see is
28 April 1737, Little Horsted
John Botting + Sarah Cogan of Fletching

From Sussex Marriage Index.

Baptism of Sarah, daughter of John + Sarah Botting, at Fletching was 5 March 1737/8. So after that marriage.

On the 1766 marriage in Fletching, Sarah is Barden in the marriage register
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DYLH-GP4?i=251&cat=215426

and in the banns register

Let's hope it's the right one ;D
It looks good. Can't see too much for Cogans in Sussex.

Left a will, a carpenter. Is this the man who married the first Sarah?
Mention it because on FS we can see the court books, 1667-1775, for Sheffield Manor in Fletching

Hi

Wow!! Thanks jonw65 and Pheno for those bits of info. I think this must be the right people. I haven't looked at this family for several years so I've been trying to look into them more lately.

Cogan is a rather unusual name so I'll see if I can find anything else for that name. Thanks for confirming what Sarah B's surname was, now I can see if I can locate her.

Thank you for the al links by the way too.

Matt

Just had a look at that the entry for John Botting in those court records [page 157]. They look interesting but I've not seen these records before. What does this record mean in short/
