George Sherriff b 1857 Direlton
« on: Sunday 08 March 20 12:15 GMT (UK) »
George Sherriff the illegitimate son of Beatrice Sherriff born 1857 is listed in the 1861 and 1871 census as George Fowler living with his grandparents in Dirleton.    The 1881 census has him (24) with his widowed grandmother but as George Sherriff.     He was possibly a witness at an aunts wedding 1878 as George Sherriff.     Thereafter absolutely, as far as I can see, nothing that matches after 1881 in  UK, North America and Australasia.    Help!

Been down that line.  Grandmother's death advised by her son, John,  who stayed along the road at Eweford Farm and who himself died 1917 in Edinburgh.     The index card relates to a granite quarryman from Aberdeenshire, one of many who went over to the States at that time.

I should add that I am old timer on this site but I am using a new internet connection without remembering login details etc.

Oops - back to home connection and records.    A slight error the 1871 census has him as a Sherriff.

There's a George Sherriff on an incoming passenger list (the Empress of India) from Quebec to Liverpool in June 1909.  This George is a farmer aged 52, so the age is just right.
However there's nothing else to help identify him.

Found him in Family Search after x number of years.  Died 25 May 1932 in Bahia Blanca, Buenos Aires, Argentina.  Married to Margaret 1864-1933, children William  1892-1948, Margaret Crawford , 1895  decd and Jane Vandepeear 1898 Decd.

Now to fill in the blanks.

North Berwick Vandepeears it would seems have connections with the Sherriffs from Dirleton which I have just scratched the surface.

Thank you for your replies

Hi Donny

There is a further reference on FS to the surnames Sherriff and Vandepeere, in Bahia Blanca in Buenos Aires at the same time as your George and family here https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/L1X3-MQX/diego-%27james-fergus%27-sherriff-1896
