UP annotation in electoral roll.
« on: Friday 20 March 20 02:31 GMT (UK) »
In the 1969 Parliamentary electoral roll for Wellington Central I find:

BURNS, WILLIAM JOSEPH, 50 MUSGRAVE ST, UP

(so UP appears where other entries have an occupation, or a designation such as MARRED, RETIRED or SPINSTER).

So my question is: what does the UP mean?. If this is the right Burns (an uncle by marriage) he would have been 72-3 years old.

The roll is poor line-printer output, but definitely a UP not OP.

Thanks in advance
Gordon

Universal Pension(er)?? Just a guess.  :)

In those days there was an Age Pension payable at 60 and means tested and Universal Superannuation paid at 65 and not means tested.

Yup, that's the man. Died 28 Jan 1976.

Leading me a right dance just now. He, and my Aunt, both supplied incorrect details in various documents.

Ha ha :-)  Not a normal thing to record as an occupation.

And the Presbyterians wouldn't have wanted a bar of the old reprobate.
