Writing Your Family History
« on: Wednesday 01 April 20 08:57 BST (UK) »
I have continued with the mammoth task of writing up the life stories of my 2 x Great Grandparents, its taking a long time to piece together the info, as we all know the further back we go the harder it is to find the records.

I hope you enjoy them.

The first one you can learn a bit about the Cement Industry and even see the Church that I was Baptised in!

During this lockdown I am certainly doing more genealogy. As said, it is easier with ones who were gentry, pillars of the community such as doctors, aldermen, mayors, vicars etc. Prior to 1750 I think outside PR's the biggest record is wills and poor law records, or visitations etc for the gentry if you strike lucky to find landed gentry in ancestry, which is more commonplace than you think.

I agree Coombs it’s a good opportunity to get some Genealogy done and do something positive with your time.

If you have library access from home ancestry are offering this free until the end of April and The National Archives will soon be offering free access online to their catalogue. All good news for anybody isolated at home.

Due to certain things in the rules they cannot allow temporary access to locked records on FamilySearch though. We cannot have everything I suppose, even in lockdown.

When I write up my ancestry, I do private blogs on Word, floating theories and adding what I have found out. Maybe I should run a blog myself and publish it online.

Go for it, I was sceptical at first, but people do read it and do take an interest, it’s good cousin bait as well

I also sometimes add estimated years of birth for ancestors, it can help for research purposes, but add a note saying "Estimated DOB".

Sometimes that’s all we have until we can prove conclusively that we have the correct birth or baptism.

A documented approximate birth date sometimes is as good as we can get.

Even the gentry, mayors, doctors, lawyers, judges, aldermen, vicars etc can be hard to find their origin. Alumni's will help but lots of such people still came from humble backgrounds and became notable, and became rich as well.
