W.Robertson - Newspaper Articles Haileybury/Muskoko
« on: Friday 03 April 20 08:44 BST (UK) »
I am hoping that someone can help me please in regards to searching for old newspapers in the Ontario region.

Would someone be able to do a search for me or point me in the right direction on where to look online?

I am searching for a former football/soccer player called W.Robertson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._Robertson). From further research, I believe that he died in Muskoka, Ontario on 31st October 1911; https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9TF-Q93H-2?i=837&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AJ6FY-ZF8.

The entry on the Wikipedia page suggests that he was in Haileybury region in 1908, and I would like to locate this article, or any others which may have been printed about him and confirm he was in the area due to soccer related.

Being from UK, I am not familiar with the region nor what newspapers covered each area at the time.

Have you checked the 1911 Scotland census (2 April 1911) to find David Robertson at 211 Glebe Street Dundee ?  I found a list of streets in Dundee in 1911 but the numbers on Glebe Street were low numbers not 211.  The death record shows William Robertson dies 31 October 1911 so that might help.

Haileybury was (and still is) small town in 1911 only 1,800 people for the village and surrounding area plus a couple of years later it pretty much burned to the ground from a forest fire.  If he coached football (soccer), it would be at the local school but I don't believe this town had a newspaper.

However, in 1901 he was in Sudbury which was large town (4,100) and if it was reported it would have been reported there as they did have a newspaper the Sudbury Journal (1891-1918).  I doubt if it is online you might have contact the Sudbury Library.

Can't help with newspapers - nothing showing on anything I tried.

There is an ancestry tree which indicates a marriage William Robertson to a Mary Ellen McDonald 27 Dec 1899 Nipising District, Nipising, Ontario.  Williams parents would be Alexander Robertson and Mary Low.

Scotland births show William Robertson 2 August 1865 - Hutchesontown,Glasgow,Lanark.

1901 census Nipising Ontario

William L Robertson   36 born 2 Aug 1864 Scotland. Imm 1895. Carpenter.
Mary E Robertson   21
Mary E Robertson   5 months.

in 1871 :   Inverury St Kincardineshire.

Mary Robertson   31
Alexander Robertson   7 born Glasgow Lanarkshire.
William Robertson   5 born Glasgow Lanarkshire. 2 Aug 1865.
David Robertson   4 born Glasgow Lanarkshire.

However Mary E Robertson (shows her widowed) and the two children appear on the 1911 Canadian census in Toronto which was taken 1 June 1911.
It was not unusual for woman to claim they are widowed even if the husband had left them.  ???

Always best to link your posts, otherwise we waste our time repeating what you already have.

At the moment I am concentrating on William being in Canada. I'm not sure what exactly I would find to help me researching David at this point. However other people who have helped looked into this from UK side suggest that address may have been 2/11 Glebe Street

That is a possibility. I'm not well educated when it comes to Canadian geography, there all names and places to me. Even google wouldn't help me much.

I will certainly try and contact Sudbury Libraries and hopefully they can also help

Any idea why that was?

In his registration of the death, he is listed as single also.
