Japanese POW Cards on FindMyPast
« on: Friday 03 April 20 08:47 BST (UK) »
Hi

In the past my searches for info on Far East POWs have thrown up Japanese Index Cards held on each prisoner and these are very useful for my research.  In the last few months these are not included in the search results.  Does anyone have the same problem?  Does anyone know what is going on with FindMyPast?  Does anyone have a 'work around' to find them?

Thanks

I'm afraid those didn't work but I found one of the cards I was looking for using the following method:

1.  Go into the National Archives catalogue Discovery as the cards were copied from their files.

2.  Search on 'WO 345'.  There are a number of files as the large number of cards are split alphabetically.  Use 'Browse' to find the reference for the range which contains the name you are looking for and note the file number.  Mine was WO345/49 which covered Spendlow to Stones.

3.  Go to FindMyPast and go to 'Prisoners of War 1715-1945 Browse' - note not the main file.

4.  In 'Archive Reference' put the file reference from Discovery so 'WO345/49' and this brings up one file in the filters.  Click that and open the file.

5.  You are now in to the card index for the alphabetical range for your person.  At the bottom of the cards shown there is a feature which allows you to chose a number of the image in the range so 1001 of 2058 for instance.  Use that to find your card by going higher/lower as they are in alphabetical order.  Note that the rear of the card is also shown here and although it is in Japanese it often has useful info.

So in all a lengthy process but still not clear why these cards do not come up when I do a name search in 'Prisoners of War 1715 - 1945'.  Got there but soooo frustrating!

Yes, I suppose so Rosie99.  But as you say I got there.  The most time consuming part is wading through the cards to find the one you are looking for.

The index is on Ancestry now but the link sends you to FOLD3 of all places  ::)

Is it possible for someone to look mine up and give me his  address to prove it is my soldier before I shell out full subs, they've taken down the pay per view option, now why did they do that?

If this is a no, no, could I get a check for him on the 1939 AV please?

Eric Henderson born  4 May 1901 St Helens, Lancs
Service number 1457586
Rank Gunner Artillary Regiment 1939-1945
24:Japanes Index Cards  POW and Internees etc   Hatch-Hayworth
I found out from FEPOW this man  was sent to Japan but don't know where he was captured.

There are two men in St Helens area with the same name and a few years between them, the birth date I have for him changes for each record I have. From 1901-1905 so address would prove useful if there is one which I've been told should be on the card.

He was with the HQ of 6th Heavy AA Regiment. Probably captured in Java.
