John Johnston (1832-1890)

I am trying to update my family with my Scottish side (my mothers)
One of my ancestors was John Johnston (1832-1890) Aberdeenshire. I believe his wife was Margaret Laing (1848-1918) This is where it gets a bit complicated (well to me it is!) I thought her father was William Laing b 1798 and mother Elspet Stables. However on the 1841 & 1851, I can find William Laing 1798  and Isabel (Bell) Thompson 1794. Which one is correct or none of them?
Also no mention of a Margaret 1848 on the 1851 census.

Elspet's death recorded 1860, Keith. (mother's maiden name Steinson). Elspet born 1809, Keith, daughter of John & Jean (Steinson). Elspet was about 11 years older than WILLIAM *
 William, Margaret's other siblings living with Wm's parents on the 1861 Keith census
ADDITION... No sign of Margaret or her sister, Elspet, only Elizabeth & Ann.

William was born 1821 in Boharm, 7 miles west of Keith, son of John Laing & Betty Innes.

Have checked the 1861 census which confirms William was from Boharm.

ADDITION

The elderly couple they are living with are not his parents but a James Laing, 75 & his sister, Margaret Laing, 78, both from Rothes, Morayshire. Likely relatives.

Strange that Margaret's sister, Elizabeth, age 8 on the 1851 census, died in 1856, age 13.

The 1861 census has an Elizabeth, age 15. Could this be Elspet??? who was 5 on the 1851 census.

No sign of Margaret in 1861.

John Johnston, born Oct 1832, Fintray, Aberdeenshire, son of Andrew Johnston & Elizabeth Reid.

After his marriage to Margaret, they are living with his mother, Betty, age 70 in Fintray on the 1871 census.

Andrew Johnston married Betty Reid, April 1832, in Old Machar
