Since he was a widower when he married Rachel, here’s a possible first marriage for William:

Marriage: 19 September 1853 at St Michael & All Angels, Croston, Lancashire

William Hampson 34, farmer, bachelor, of Bedford
Catherine Morris 26, spinster, of Croston
Groom’s father: George Hampson, farmer
Bride’s father: Jonathan Morris, grocer

Catherine Hampson, “24”, of Westleigh, was buried at St George, Tyldesley, Lancs on 20 December 1854.
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

1851 has William Hampson b 1811 living alone in Liverpool

Piece 2179 folio 792 page 58

Have you checked www.lancashirebmd.org.uk or www.freebmd.org.uk for marriage info

That fits but I'll need to see if it fits with the other replies so far.

Have you discounted the 1840 marriage to Rachel Newall?

The 1889 death was 72 so b 1817 not 1811

The marriage fits but the age at death doesn't tie in with the MI details (died 1889 aged 78)

William Hampson was of Bond St, Leigh when he published a newspaper apology admitting having used “false and slanderous language” affecting the character and reputation of William Shaw, managing director of the Bedford Brewing & Malting Company, Bedford, Leigh, in November 1885.

The Leigh Chronicle, 13 November 1885.

I got that from the British Newspaper Archive, but many thanks for the response.

According to the MI the first recorded wife was called Rachel and the second wife was called Matty but I cannot discount him having had three wives but the above doesn't fit the other knowns we have.

Does the gravestone say Rachel was the first wife? She seems to have been his second wife, and Matty the third.
